1. If your website is script heavy and has a large database to begin with - it is best to start off with a dedicated server; shared hosting will cause problems in the near future and is not ideal in such a case - plus you can always host other websites on the same server.
2. Blogs and websites with "light" programming can function great even in a shared server; but if you have a busy forum, you may want to still consider using a dedicated server.

3. Technical Support's level of helpfulness; if you can, try to email support before purchasing hosting, and see how they answer your questions regarding hosting - this will give you an idea of their response rate and the level of helpfulness. 4. SSL - You need to know if you will be needing a Secured Server access; usually used for e-commerce websites; but you don't need this if your website accepts PayPal or Google Checkout payment systems, as they already have their own SSL certificates; if you do need an SSL certificate, find out its costs before you buy hosting, as some do not allow SSL certificates to be purchased from elsewhere.

5. Script Support - Make sure technical services includes the support you need for running your website. If your website runs on a known script (such as WordPress), then it is an advantage if technical support can assist you in this if you ever come across any obstacles in the future.

Not all web hosting is equal, explore around, search in forums for their reviews - the more reputable hosting company you purchase from, the better - it will even help in search engine rankings, as search engines like Google, also look at the authority level of the hosting company hosting your website.
